Theatrics & DUCTAC in aid of the Dubai Autism Center present Molière’s classic farce

THE WOULD-BE GENTLEMAN

Friday 24 - Saturday 25 April 2009 and on Friday 8 - Saturday 9 May 2009
Two shows each day: Matinee-2pm and Evening-8pm

Five-act play in English

Since The Would-be Gentleman first opened, before the Sun King, Louis XIV, in 1669, generations of theatre lovers have loved its acute observation of human nature and its irreverent send up of our follies and pretensions. Aristocrat, merchant and commoner alike, men and women, parents and children, husbands and wives, none can escape Molière’s acerbic wit, and none is spared a merciless lampooning. Combined with Molière’s mastery of stagecraft and comic construction, The Would-be Gentleman has remained a staple in theatre seasons across the world for nearly 350 years.

Theatrics’ production of this classic is directed by K. Chandrasekhar, who has been associated with the theatre for over twenty-five years, first with the Delhi group, Chingari, and later with Theatrics in Dubai. Chandra has directed plays in English, French and Hindi, and has also worked extensively in television.

Tickets: AED 50

RICHARD III
AN ARAB TRAGEDY

in Arabic with English surtitles Adapted and Directed by Suleyman al Bassam Commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company

March 20 2009
Al Ain Al Jahili Fort

March 29-30 2009
Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation

Never before had the Royal Shakespeare Company commissioned a play in Arabic, when they asked Sulayman Al Bassam to create Richard III: An Arab Tragedy for their Complete Works Festival in Stratford Upon Avon. Since then, the play has travelled to many countries and met with great acclaim by critics and audiences- most recently to the Kennedy Center in Washington DC- but never has it been presented in a Gulf state, outside of Al Bassam’s native Kuwait. It is our privilege to be presenting the UAE premiere of Richard III: An Arab Tragedy, on March 20th, in a space that claims its own place in our country’s past: Al Ain’s historical Al Jahili Fort. With the recently renovated Fort’s stunning landscape and architecture providing the original scenographic backdrop for the play to unfold, Sulayman Al Bassam's company will create an outdoor site-specific performance with a star studded cast of actors from across the region, accompanied by live music and video, offering a magical and unique experience to those of us lucky enough to witness it. The Abu Dhabi performances on the 29th and 30th of March will be held at the Cultural Foundation and although they signify the end of the play’s UAE tour they also hopefully stand to reinforce our respectful commitment to the Arts of the Theatre.
