Amateur Dramatics in Dubai
The Dubai Drama Group is pleased to announce that it will be producing George Bernard Shaw’s timeless classic, Pygmalion on 13th – 15th May at thejamjar in Al Quoz, Dubai.
Written almost 100 years ago, this romantic comedy shines a light on the thorny topics of poverty, social mobility and women’s emancipation. Directed by Nina Hein, it focuses on a very simple storyline: two upper class friends place a bet to see if a working class flower girl (Eliza Doolittle) can be transformed to speak ‘proper’ English so that she can pass as a Duchess at an upper class garden party.
One of the friends - a phonetics teacher - takes Eliza under his arm to transform her and inevitably falls in love with her in the process.
Come to find out if our two gentlemen are successful in teaching the common flower girl to behave and speak like a lady!
Admission is free with a suggested donation of 75 Dirham’s. Doors open at 7pm and the show commences at 7:30pm. Parking is readily available at thejamjar.

Local Film is released!
This is a very important step in developing the local film industry as this is the first Emirati film to achieve theatrical release (for those of you who do not know it combines three stories and languages being Arabic, Hindi and English and is a true depiction of life in Dubai).
The success of this film is pivotal to the growth and development of the industry.
While we are very proud of the film, we still had to work in restrictive conditions and could only push the envelope so far and still get a release. As it was, this film nearly did not get a release. The eyes of the government and investors are keenly watching what the emotional and financial results of this film will be and it is imperative to try and gain as much attention as possible.
As we do not have budget to market the film in any big way and as local distributors do not put up any marketing money (like in the rest of the world), we would therefore like to request you please send this mail onto everyone you know in the UAE and to please spend the AED30 and take the time out to see the film.
The development and success of the local film industry lies solely in your hands. So please, be part of what we are trying to achieve so future films tackling even more sensitive and important subject matters can be produced.

We have been to the moon, solved the theory of relativity, but one problem remains – why are men and women so different? That’s what Mark Little sets out to answer in the Olivier Award-winning production Defending the Caveman. Translated into 30 languages and seen in over 45 countries, Defending the Caveman has toured the world successfully since 1991 and is making its next stop in Dubai.
This Norwell Lapley Production is sponsored by Land Rover and Time Out Dubai.
Mark Little is returning to his critically acclaimed role in the ‘Best Entertainment’ Olivier Award winning production ‘Defending the Caveman’. Directed by Cathy Farr, last year’s London run at the Leicester Square Theatre immediately sold out and an extended run was shortly announced. Now ‘Defending the Caveman’ takes centre stage at The First Group Theatre at Souk Madinat Jumeirah.
Created and performed by Rob Becker in San Francisco in 1991, the show, which was awarded the prestigious honour when Mark took on the role at the Apollo Theatre in 2000, is the longest running solo play in Broadway history. Having been translated into 16 different languages, ‘Caveman’ has become a worldwide hit, performing to over 5 million people globally in Germany, Slovenia, Belgium, France, Russia, Australia and South Africa to name but a few!
With hysterical observations into contemporary feminism, masculine sensitivity and the erogenous zones, ‘Defending the Caveman’ has both sexes roaring with laughter and recognition as they identify themselves in the tales being told. In short, it mines the common themes in relationships that go straight through the funny bone and into the heart.

If you want pure Bollywood-style escapism and great fun, then Mahim Junction will be the must-see event of the year. Seats are going fast, so book now to avoid disappointment!

MAHIM JUNCTION
Bollywood of the 1970s…a time when heroes wore their hearts on their sleeves and the villains paved the mean streets of Mumbai with gold. A time to dream, and the time at hand to chase those dreams. A slum adjacent to the local train platform in suburban Mumbai is inhabited by a motley crew, including Rahim, the local dada, a good Samaritan with a heart of gold who is in love with Radha, the belle who has many hearts wanting to beat in tune with hers.
Belonging to different faiths, they fear that their respective families will never accept their love. Radha’s harridan mother would much rather sell her daughter than help her marry the man she loves, yet her physically challenged brother is ready to sacrifice anything for his sister and her happiness with Rahim.
Mr Kaladhanda is the amorous Bollywood film producer who sells dreams of stardom to attract young girls into his lair, while Randy Bhai is the Harvard graduate son of a well heeled and corrupt businessman, who dreams of making a difference in the world of black marketers, mobsters and rigged elections. Two further memorable characters, Johnny and Ayesha, complete the cast.
Mahim Junction, written by the internationally acclaimed Sohaila Kapur, has played to full houses across India, in the UK and in Singapore. It is now set to burst onto stage at DUCTAC in Dubai… so book now to guarantee your seat at this must-see show.

ONE SMALL STEP | ||
The space race was, sometimes literally, one of the most explosive adventures of the twentieth century. One Small Step explores this incredible contest, from the first dog in space to the moon landing and beyond! The action-packed quest for the giant leap is undertaken by two extraordinary young actors who bring dozens of characters (41 to be exact…) to life in a brilliantly inventive portrayal of the space race.
Inspirational and educational for adults and youngsters alike, One Small Step is full of emotion, intense moments, epic achievements and humour, from beginning to triumphant end.
One Small Step is a new play that was launched in 2008 at the Edinburgh Fringe. It thrilled audiences and quickly received five and four star reviews from The Sunday Times and The Scotsman, among others. It was subsequently chosen to be part of the British Council Showcase, a biennially-selected collection of cutting edge British work. Prior to this year’s festival One Small Step completed a successful tour across the UK and Ireland..

ANIMAL FARM* | ||
Gary Shelford’s magnificent solo performance of George Orwell’s classic satire has to be seen to be believed! Using nothing but a wooden box, some amazing creative sound effects and brilliant physical and vocal dexterity, Shelford ignites Orwell’s famous yarn with a modern, sinister relevance.
Hilariously comic and powerfully poignant by turns, Shelford’s breathtaking storytelling creates the farmyard in front of you during 110 minutes of utterly compelling theatre. Switching from animal to animal, each character is vividly portrayed, leaving an indelible memory in the consciousness.
This powerful show leaves anyone who sees it – young or old – with no doubt that Orwell’s allegorical message of betrayed idealism is as relevant and important today as it was 50 years ago. If you’ve never seen or read Animal Farm, this adaptation will bring this legendary work to life.
“A brilliant adaptation that delights with its physical grace and artistry. It’s complex and entirely theatrical; a combination of bravura acting and poetic storytelling which milks new nuance and meaning!”
