Position for Part-Time Drama Instructor in Abu Dhabi
From January 2010 Drama Dubai is looking to expand into Abu Dhabi and offer a generic Drama Course for beginners.
The term will start in mid - late January 2010 and last approximately eight weeks. Classes will be 2 hours per session, once a week and held on Saturday's, and if numbers dictate, a second class will be added on Thursday OR Friday Evenings depending on the teacher's (and our) preference.
This job would suit somebody already in the teaching profession who wishes to make a bit of extra money and gain experience teaching adults. It is out intention to have two or more classes running three times a year (as we do in Dubai) and so good earning potential and future expansion is there for the right person.
Applicants will need to be extremely well-organized and have a good subject knowledge, practical ability and the class management skills to deliver the course to classes of 10 - 15 adults and have them walk away begging for more. Workshops include sessions on improvisation, voice, stagecraft, and are flexible enough to allow and even encourage your own input.
Please see the www.dramaworkshopsdubai.com website for a detailed breakdown of what we do and pay particular attention to the adult courses that we offer!
Interested applicants can email tiffany@dramaworkshopsdubai.com.

Two Dutch artists are looking for actors for their City Portrait project. A city portait will exist out of 24 one-minute films, all of them focussing on different aspects of the city. The city portraits (http://www.cityoneminutes.org) are an initiative from the Dutch-based One Minute foundation and will be shown during the Shanghai World Expo.
Essentially this means they will have many small parts to fill. The roles will be partly derived from existing scenes (monologues and dialogues) from (Hollywood) movies.
They have expressed an interest in a number of the actors on our website, but are interested in meeting all of those who may be interested. Also let them know of any other talents such as singing etc. The meetings will take place on Tuesday evening and Wednesday evening from 6 PM to 9 PM in the Basta Art cafe in Bastakia Quarter. They will do a small interview and maybe some coldreading.
The interviews will be scheduled, so please contact Margit directly to make an appointment to see the, The interview would not be more then 30 minutes.
We would shoot the scenes Friday and Saturday. Since it's a cultural institution everything is done on a very tight budget there will be a small fee.
If there's people who would like to audition but can't make it during the proposed time we could arrange another time/location.
Interested actors, please contact Margit at (0) 50 9707456.

THE WOULD-BE GENTLEMAN
Friday 24 - Saturday 25 April 2009 and on Friday 8 - Saturday 9 May 2009
Two shows each day: Matinee-2pm and Evening-8pm
Five-act play in English
Since The Would-be Gentleman first opened, before the Sun King, Louis XIV, in 1669, generations of theatre lovers have loved its acute observation of human nature and its irreverent send up of our follies and pretensions. Aristocrat, merchant and commoner alike, men and women, parents and children, husbands and wives, none can escape Molière’s acerbic wit, and none is spared a merciless lampooning. Combined with Molière’s mastery of stagecraft and comic construction, The Would-be Gentleman has remained a staple in theatre seasons across the world for nearly 350 years.
Theatrics’ production of this classic is directed by K. Chandrasekhar, who has been associated with the theatre for over twenty-five years, first with the Delhi group, Chingari, and later with Theatrics in Dubai. Chandra has directed plays in English, French and Hindi, and has also worked extensively in television.
Tickets: AED 50

AN ARAB TRAGEDY
in Arabic with English surtitles Adapted and Directed by Suleyman al Bassam Commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company
March 20 2009
Al Ain Al Jahili Fort
March 29-30 2009
Abu Dhabi Cultural Foundation
Never before had the Royal Shakespeare Company commissioned a play in Arabic, when they asked Sulayman Al Bassam to create Richard III: An Arab Tragedy for their Complete Works Festival in Stratford Upon Avon. Since then, the play has travelled to many countries and met with great acclaim by critics and audiences- most recently to the Kennedy Center in Washington DC- but never has it been presented in a Gulf state, outside of Al Bassam’s native Kuwait. It is our privilege to be presenting the UAE premiere of Richard III: An Arab Tragedy, on March 20th, in a space that claims its own place in our country’s past: Al Ain’s historical Al Jahili Fort. With the recently renovated Fort’s stunning landscape and architecture providing the original scenographic backdrop for the play to unfold, Sulayman Al Bassam's company will create an outdoor site-specific performance with a star studded cast of actors from across the region, accompanied by live music and video, offering a magical and unique experience to those of us lucky enough to witness it. The Abu Dhabi performances on the 29th and 30th of March will be held at the Cultural Foundation and although they signify the end of the play’s UAE tour they also hopefully stand to reinforce our respectful commitment to the Arts of the Theatre.

And thousands hear the lure of the stage.
Then see the truckling city clerk at night
Transformed into a royal and noble sight.
Bedecked in tinplate armour watch him tower,
A swelling monarch for his petty hour.
The spotty typist sheds her office weeds
And lo! We have a Carmen straight from Leeds!
Fear not! All amateurs are not the same,
Some Little Theatres higher standards claim,
And hold with fervor nigh obsessional
That amateur, profession’l, clown or Lear,
Someone must bear the message, grasp the spear.
With crepe hair all askew, a parley hold,
Or tell the guests that dinner’s getting cold.
It is for these poor servants of the muse,
Coarse Actors all, that I this volume choose.
A dedication make, both brief and short
To those with cardboard spears at Agincourt.

Harold Pinter
- Michael Billington
- guardian.co.uk, Thursday 25 December 2008 14.24 GMT
Harold Pinter, who has died at the age of 78, was the most influential, provocative and poetic dramatist of his generation. He enjoyed parallel careers as actor, screenwriter and director and was also, especially in recent years, a vigorous political polemicist campaigning against abuses of human rights. But it is for his plays that he will be best remembered and for his ability to create dramatic poetry out of everyday speech. Among the dramatists of the last century, Beckett is his only serious rival in terms of theatrical influence; and it is a measure of Pinter's power that early on in his career he spawned the adjective "Pinteresque" suggesting a cryptically mysterious situation imbued with hidden menace.
